Chapter 1: Your License to Drive
Overview of Licensing
Alabama Law: Requires that anyone who drives on public roads must be licensed, with exceptions.
Issuing Authority: Licensed by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
License Requirements
General Requirement:
Every Alabama resident operating a motor vehicle must obtain a driver's license.
Exemption for farm tractors when used temporarily.
Examination Requirements:
New applicants or those with a license expired over 3 years must pass an exam.
Out-of-state license holders not expired for more than a year are exempt from passing the examination.

Habitual drunkards or drug addicts.
Individuals under 19 not adhering to high school attendance or graduation requirements.
Identification Requirements
Identification:
Must provide 2 forms of ID (one with photo) and 3 forms of non-photo ID.
Those transferring from another state must provide their out-of-state license, Social Security card, and one primary document.
Proof of Age and Birthdate
Documentation:
Applicants must meet age requirements for specific licenses.
A prior Alabama license can serve as proof; otherwise, an original/certified birth document is required.

Accommodations for Hearing Impairment
Examinations:
Available in American Sign Language.
Automated testing only offered at select locations.
Other Forms of Examination
Oral Examinations: Are available for those who cannot read or understand written tests.
Driver License Requirements

Motor Driven Cycle License
Eligibility:
May obtain at 14 or 15 years with restrictions on engine size and weight.
