In Class Notes - Photosynthesis
11/2/22
Photosynthesis equation:
6CO2 + 6H2O (+ light energy) → C6H12O6 + ^ 6O2
Photosynthesis; LD
Reactants: light, H2O
Products: ^ O2, 18 ATPs, 12 NADPH
LID:
2 photosystems
PII PI
noncyclic phosphorylation - LD
In the chloroplast, the actual reaction happens in the thylakoid (when in stacks called granna)
Fluid in the stroma
Autotrophic organisms make their own food
Photosynthesis is endergonic, cellular respiration is exergonic
Test question about where the O2 byproduct comes from (H2O splits)
Chlorophyll is made of the pigments Chlorophyll A and B (p680 and p700), both in different photosystems
only plants can split water from the magnesium in the chlorophyll
the chlorophyll splits the water
Leo says Ger
Loss of electron = oxidation & Gaining of electron = reduction
photosystem 2 then 1
NADP
NAD
FAD
Energy carriers^, they carry energy in the form of electrons
11/3/22
6CO2 + 6H2O (+ light energy) → C6H12O6 + ^ 6O2
ALL PLANTS USE NON CYCLIC PHOTOPHOSPHORYLATION. (18 ATPS, 12 NADPHS)
Two major parts: Light dependent reaction and light independent reaction. Both occur in the chloroplast. Plant cells are the only organisms on earth with chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are double membraned and have their own ribosomes too!
Light dependent reaction: 2 photosystems, PII then PI. Non-cyclic photophosphorylation occurs.
Light independent reaction: Water and carbon dioxide and ATP all react in the thylakoid and the chlorophyll splits the water in each photosystem.
- light strikes chlorophhyll molecule (strikes magensium that it boosts an e- to another level and gives it enough enenergy overall to break a water molecule)
- Protons get pumped into thylakoid space
- The ATP Synthase changes its shape when the pH in the thylakoid is 1000 times higher than the stroma.
Rubisco is the most common protein on earth
