KINSHIP

Kinship refers to the social and familial bonds between people, encompassing relationships based on blood, marriage, or adoption.

TYPES OF KINSHIP

  1. Consanguineal or Lineal Kinship: Kinship based on blood.
  2. Affinal Kinship: Kinship based on marriage.
  3. Kinship in Politics: Influence of family ties on political processes and structures.

CONSANGUINEAL

  • Kinship based on blood.
  • Descent Systems:
    • Patrilineal
    • Matrilineal
    • Bilineal

UNILINEAL DESCENT

  • Tracing descent through a single line of ancestors, either male or female.
    1. Patrilineal Descent
    2. Matrilineal Descent

BILINEAL DESCENT

  • Tracing descent from both patrilineal and matrilineal lines.

AFFINAL

  • Kinship based on marriage.

MARRIAGE

  • Union of a man and a woman.
    1. Monogamy and Polygamy
    2. Endogamy and Exogamy

MONOGAMY

  • Types of marriage where only two people are involved.

POLYGAMY

  • Types of marriage where a person marries more than one individual.
    1. Polygyny: One man is married to multiple women.
    2. Polyandry: One woman has multiple husbands.

ENDOGAMY

  • Partner is found within the same social or cultural group.

EXOGAMY

  • Partner is found outside of the group.

  • Refers to the influence of family ties on political processes and structures.
