Composition of photography

Rule of thirds

  • one of the most impactful and basic composition techniques

  • 3×3 grid, the subject or focus needs to be in one of those “grids” not the middle, it has to be Vertical

Framing

  • The composition where it involves “choosing what you’ll include” in the image and what you want to leave out, its a way to make the viewers attention focus on the subject and the subject alone

    • Kind of like emphasis/dominance

Symmetry

  • the same as the elements of art, symmetery appears through mirroring an imaginary “2 halves” of the picture, creating a proportional and balanced picture that feels neat

Golden Ratio

  • The golden ratio is approx 1.618 to 1

  • Has been used for centuries by artists, architects, and musicians

  • This can be seen naturally in every day life

  • You simply place the objects in your composition in the “ratio”

Feld'man’s Art criticism Process

  1. Description- Viewing a work of art and taking it in visually noting what is instantly visible

  2. Analysis- discovering the relationships among the elements/composition

  3. Interpretation- discovering hidden meanings within the work by focising on context of the arts name, year it was made and expressive qualities

  4. Judgement- Evaluating quality by assessing the work on specific criteria within the context of works similar to it
