Definitions
Individualistic cultures:
Priorities the individual independence and autonomy over the group.
Typically, in the west i.e. USA & UK.
Collectivist cultures:
Prioritize the group, family and community over the individual.
Typically, in the east i.e. China & Japan.
Research of Van Ijzendoorn & Kroonenberg – meta-analysis:
A meta-analysis takes the data from many other studies and combines the results to see the overall effect or trends.
Analyzed 32 studies from 8 countries with 1990 participants. All these studies made use of the strange situation to measure attachment.
They wanted to see if there were any intercultural differences – differences BETWEEN cultures.
They wanted to see if there were any intracultural differences – differences WITHIN cultures.
