The Norman Rule

The fuedal system

The feudal system showed the hierarchy of different groups of people in medieval society.

The king was at the top, he owned all the land, and gave some to the Nobles. The Nobles gave money and protection for the King. They gave land to the knights, whom gave protection and military service for the Barons. The knights protected the peasants, who gave food and services, with little left for themselves.

Language and cultural change

England's new rulers spoke French, so some words entered the English language. Norman culture introduced new music and architecture to England.

Castles and cathedrals

The Normans built huge castles across England to keep the Saxons under control, and to subdue the Welsh. Vast cathedrals were built to honour God. They sent the message that Normans had a God-given right to rule.

Power and control

The country was surveyed, and results were recorded in the Domesday Book for taxes. When people in North England rebelled, William ordered the Harrying of the North 1069 - 1070. People were killed or starved to death. The population fell by 75%. William took land from English Lords and gave it go Norman Lords.
