Objectives of the Yalta Conference
The main purpose was to discuss the post-war reorganization of Germany and Eastern European nations occupied by Nazi forces.
Division of Germany
Agreement reached on the division of Germany into four occupation zones:
American Zone
British Zone
French Zone
Soviet Zone
Formation of West Germany:
The American, British, and French zones were later combined to create a new country: West Germany.
Formation of East Germany:
The zone occupied by the Soviet Union became known as East Germany.
Financial Reparations
Rejection of Stalin's Demands:
Stalin demanded that Germany pay the Soviet Union $20 billion in war damages.
Roosevelt and Churchill rejected this demand during the meeting.
Soviet Involvement in the Pacific War
Roosevelt's Press for Action Against Japan:
Roosevelt urged Stalin to declare war on Japan.
At that time, the atomic bomb had not yet been tested.
The President wanted Soviet assistance if an invasion of Japan was deemed necessary.
Stalin's Promise to Enter War Against Japan:
Stalin agreed to enter the war against Japan once Germany surrendered.
The Polish Government Issue
Challenges Related to Poland:
Poland was a major point of contention at the Yalta Conference.
The Red Army had occupied Poland and supported a communist-dominated government.
Exile Government in London:
The pre-war Polish government was in exile in London and opposed by Stalin.
Security Concerns:
Stalin focused on the historical context that Poland provided an invasion route into Russia, as demonstrated by Hitler's invasion.
Stalin's Requirement:
The Polish government needed to be sympathetic to Soviet security needs to be recognized.
Outcome of Discussions on Polish Government:
Stalemate in the Yalta meeting until Stalin agreed to allow elections in Poland for the citizens to choose their government.
Stalin later violated this agreement and supported the communist government in Poland with Soviet troops.
