Response

Stimulus and Response

  • Definitions:

    • Stimulus: Any factor in the environment that triggers a response from an organism.

    • Response: The reaction from the organism towards a stimulus.

Nervous System

  • Function: The nervous system is responsible for processing stimuli and initiating responses.

  • Information Processing:

    • Senses collect information from the environment.

    • The information is transported to the brain for analysis (e.g., determining danger, love, hate).

    • The brain gives orders to the body's cells and organs.

Neurons

  • Definition: Neurons are nerve cells that make up the nervous system.

  • Parts of Neurons:

    • Dendrites: Receive signals from other cells.

    • Cell Body: Contains the nucleus and organelles.

    • Axon: Long projection that transmits impulses away from the cell body.

    • Schwann Cells: Produce the myelin sheath.

    • Myelin Sheath: Insulating layer that speeds up nerve impulse transmission.

    • Nodes of Ranvier: Gaps in the myelin sheath where impulses jump, enhancing speed.

    • Axon Terminal: End of the axon that transmits the signal to the next neuron.

Summary of Process

  • Process of Response:

    • Step 1: Senses detect stimuli.

    • Step 2: Information travels to the brain.

    • Step 3: Brain analyzes the information.

    • Step 4: Orders are sent through neurons to create a response.
