Each electrolyte has specific areas where it is found in abundance and where it functions predominantly.
Hyponatremia

Causes of Hyponatremia
Various reasons can lead to hyponatremia, including:
Overuse of Diuretics
Example Medication: Lasix (Furosemide)
This can occur particularly in hypervolemic patients (those with excess volume) who are being treated with diuretics.
Renal Disease
Includes conditions such as renal insufficiency and renal failure.
Kidneys play a crucial role in regulating sodium and water retention.
Impaired or failed kidneys can disrupt the regulation of fluid, leading to hyponatremia.
Heart Failure
Patients with heart failure are also at risk of hyponatremia.
Mechanism: These patients often have a higher volume of solvents (water) than solutes (sodium).
Condition: They experience hemodilution where the sodium concentration is diluted due to fluid overload.
Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone (SIADH)
Definition: SIADH is characterized by excessive levels of antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin), which prevents the kidneys from excreting water.
Contrast with Diabetes Insipidus, a condition in which patients have a deficiency of vasopressin, leading to excessive urination.
SIADH can cause excessive water retention, contributing to hyponatremia due to dilution of sodium in the body fluids.
