Overview of Integumentary System
Integument: Largest organ in the body, comprising 16% of body weight and covering about 2 square meters.
Structure: Composed of multiple layers of cells and tissues, including skin and accessory organs such as hair and nails.

Skin Structure and Function
Components of the Skin
Epidermis: The outermost layer, providing protection and waterproofing.
Dermis: The deep layer, rich in blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.
Hypodermis (subcutaneous layer): A fatty layer that provides insulation, energy storage, and cushioning.
Accessory Structures
Hair: Composed of dead keratinized cells, varies in texture and pigmentation.
Nails: Protect the distal phalanges, increase sensitivity and precision.
Glands: Include sweat glands (merocrine and apocrine), sebaceous glands, and specialized glands.
Functionality of the Integumentary System
Key Functions
Protection: Against trauma, infection, UV radiation, and dehydration.
Sensation: Via sensory receptors in the skin that detect touch, temperature, and pain.
Thermoregulation: Maintains body temperature through vasoconstriction and vasodilation.
Vitamin D Synthesis: Skin plays a vital role in the production of Vitamin D.
Communication: Nonverbal cues such as skin color changes can indicate health status.
Epidermis
Structure of the Epidermis
Composed of 4-5 layers:
Stratum Corneum: Outermost, composed of dead keratinized cells.
Stratum Lucidum: Present only in thick skin, provides an extra layer of protection.
Stratum Granulosum: Where keratinocytes begin to die and keratin is produced.
Stratum Spinosum: Provides strength and flexibility due to keratin filaments.
Stratum Basale: Deepest layer, where stem cells and melanocytes reside.
Characteristics of Epidermis
Avascular: relies on diffusion from the dermis for nutrients.
Mainly composed of keratinocytes, cells that synthesize keratin.
Contains few nerve endings and is prone to damage.
Dermis
Structure of the Dermis
Composed of connective tissue, divided into:
Papillary Layer: Superficial layer with areolar tissue rich in capillaries.
Reticular Layer: Deeper layer with dense irregular connective tissue, containing collagen and elastin fibers.
Features of the Dermis
Rich in blood vessels, nerve endings, and glands.
Provides skin with strength, elasticity, and flexibility.
Hair
Structure of Hair
Consists of three main parts:
Bulb: Base of the hair, contains living cells.
Root: Portion within the hair follicle.
Shaft: The visible part above the skin surface.
Functions of Hair
Provides warmth, sensory detection, and protection against sunburn.
Aids in nonverbal communication and signals sexual maturity.
Types of Hair
Lanugo: Fine, downy hair on fetuses.
Vellus: Thin, pale hair on most of the body.
Terminal: Coarser and pigmented hair, found in various locations including the scalp and facial hair.
Exocrine Glands
Gland Types and Functions
Merocrine Sweat Glands: Most numerous, involved in thermoregulation through watery sweat.
Apocrine Sweat Glands: Found in specific areas, their secretions develop in puberty and may function in pheromone release.
Sebaceous Glands: Produce sebum to keep skin hydrated.
Ceruminous Glands: Produce earwax to protect ears.
Mammary Glands: Associated with milk production.
Repair and Regeneration
Two primary processes for skin healing: regeneration (functional restoration) and fibrosis (formation of scar tissue).
Aging and Skin Changes
Skin undergoes changes with age, leading to decreased elasticity, moisture, and vulnerability to damage.
Prevention strategies include sun protection, hydration, and nutrition.
Skin Cancer
Most common type of cancer, with different forms including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
Early detection is key for better outcomes. Use the ABC(DE) rules to evaluate moles and other skin irregularities.
