Unit 3: Land-Based Empires

• Manchu Empire
  What: The Manchu Empire, also known as the Qing Dynasty Where: China When: 1644-1912 Why: The Manchu people, led by Nurhaci, overthrew the Ming Dynasty and established their own empire to consolidate power and expand their influence. They adopted Chinese culture, implemented Confucianism, and expanded their territory through military conquests. The empire faced challenges such as rebellions, conflicts with European powers, and internal corruption, leading to its eventual downfall.

• Russian Empire

  What: A vast empire that existed from 1721 to 1917. Where: Centered in Eastern Europe and extended across Asia. When: Established in 1721, it lasted until the Russian Revolution in 1917. Why: The Russian Empire aimed to expand its territory, consolidate power, and promote Russian culture and influence. It sought to modernize and industrialize, while maintaining autocratic rule. It faced internal conflicts, social unrest, and external pressures, leading to its eventual downfall.
