Rug Mounting and Hoof/Claw Processing
SKINING PROCESS FOR RUG MOUNTING
- Rug mounting involves mounting only the head (mouth open) attached to the rest of the skin.
- The skin is tanned and mounted on felt.
- Skinning method for predators is similar to flat body skins; head, ears, eyes, lips, and nose require careful skinning.
- Skulls must be preserved and cleaned.
- A length-wise breast incision is optional but limits future mounting possibilities.
SKINNING AND PROCESSING OF HOOVES/CLAWS
- Proper cleaning and handling of hooves are crucial to prevent decomposition and loss.
- Feet must be cut to the client's specified length.
Elephant, Rhino, and Hippo Feet
- Feet can be hollowed out without making an incision to the sole, or cut open at the back for easier bone removal.
- Remove all small bones, fatty tissue, and flesh up to the sole.
- Fill feet with salt, replacing daily until no moisture is secreted, or salt well and fold.
Zebra, Buffalo, and Antelope Feet
- Cut the back open to the base of the hooves.
- Remove all leg flesh, fat, and all small bones from the hooves.
- Apply salt liberally and dry in the shade.
