International City Models Notes

International City Models

Southeast Asian City Model

  • No traditional CBD; the city is based around the port zone's geographic location.

  • Developed as trading ports during colonial times.

  • Commercial zones (manufacturing, etc.) are located near the port.

  • AC = Alien Commercial Zone – to expand trade with Western states.

  • Government facilities are also located near the port.

  • Residence zones are not separated by class; the wealthy and poor can live next to each other.

Latin American City Model

  • The CBD (may be next to an important church) is in the center but is connected to a mall (edge city) through a spine (street adorned with shops, offices, restaurants).

  • Nicest homes are along the spine.

  • Disamenity zones: areas of high poverty, located in the global periphery.

    • May include squatter settlements, also called favelas.

    • Lack infrastructure, sanitation, electricity.

    • Residents need a supportive politician or find civil rights laws that will enable them to stay on the land.

African City Model

  • Three distinct CBDs:

    • Colonial CBD: grid system.

    • Traditional CBD: low-rise buildings, vendors.

    • Third CBD: open-air markets.

  • Higher-income neighborhoods are near the CBDs.

  • Outer rings: squatter settlements (informal satellite townships).
