We have a cold climate. This is why we adapt our houses to our environment. Our houses are usually made of lumber and have cogon grass roof called bale. The four posts of the house are 10 to 12 feet high. The house is almost covered with a triangular roof. There are no windows to keep the warmth inside the house. We do not use nails and screws in building houses but they are sturdy. They can withstand strong typhoons and even earthquakes.

Our community enjoys the warm climate. This is why our houses are made of lumber or bamboo with cogon grass as roof. Many other houses are made of cement, lumber, and metal roof. Other provinces and agricultural regions have the same kind of houses.

I am Abdul. I am a Badjao from the province of Tawi-Tawi, which belongs to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or ARMM.

We used to live in a boat house called lepa. We used to transfer from one place to another because my father's main source of livelihood is fishing. But when my sister Fatima and I started going to school, we moved to a stilt house. It is a house that is built on top of bamboo posts in the water. From there, we take a boat to go to school. We adapt our way of life to the environment because my father is a fisherman and my mother sells the fish that he catches.

I am Roy and I belong to the group of informal settlers. We do not have our own land. This is why we live in a house made of plywood and cardboard near Manggahan Floodway in Pasig City. Every time it rains very hard, the water level rises so our community becomes flooded.

It is hard to adapt to this kind of situation but I know that government representatives have already talked to my parents. They said we will be transferred to a safer place in the City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan. It will be a better place because our lives as well as our properties will not be in danger anymore, especially during typhoons and heavy rains.
