Elements of Art

  • Space: Refers to positive space (enclosed by shapes) and negative space (the area around shapes).

  • Line: A series of points that vary in form (curved, dotted, broken) and direction (vertical, horizontal, diagonal).

  • Shape: Result of two ends of a line being connected; it is two-dimensional (length and width).

    • Form: A three-dimensional object with depth, unlike a flat shape.

  • Color: Perceived when light bounces off objects; includes lightness/darkness and coolness/warmth.

  • Value: Describes lightness or darkness in color.

  • Texture: Refers to the tactile or illusory surface of an artwork.

Principles of Art

  • Scale and Proportion: Relate to the size relationships within the artwork.

  • Harmony: Unity referring to the arrangement of parts in the artwork.

  • Variety: Introduces diversity through multiple elements to break monotony.

  • Movement: Represents the passage of time; conveys flow through composition.

  • Rhythm: Establishes flow through repetition of design elements.

  • Balance: Distribution of elements in an artwork; can be:

    • Informal (Asymmetry): Unequal distribution of designs.

    • Formal (Symmetry): Equal weight distribution of designs.

  • Emphasis: Highlights certain elements to create a greater impact.

  • Subordination: Supplementary elements that support the emphasized element.

Application in Visual Arts
