Past, Present, And Future Tenses - Malay
1. Present Tense
The present tense in Malay is often implied and does not require a specific marker unless you want to emphasize that something is currently happening. However, words like "sedang" (currently) or "tengah" (in the middle of) can add emphasis.
Example Sentences:
Saya makan nasi. – I am eating rice.
Saya sedang makan nasi. – I am currently eating rice.
Ali tengah belajar. – Ali is in the middle of studying.
Note: Adding "sedang" or "tengah" is optional; the sentence "Saya makan nasi" also means "I am eating rice" without needing additional markers.
2. Past Tense
The past tense is indicated with words like "sudah" (already) or "telah" (have). Either word is placed before the verb to show that an action is completed.
Example Sentences:
Saya sudah makan nasi. – I have eaten rice.
Dia telah balik. – He/She has returned.
Mereka sudah sampai. – They have arrived.
Note: Using "sudah" or "telah" implies that the action is done. You can also use "tadi" (earlier) at the beginning or end of a sentence to indicate recent past:
Saya makan nasi tadi. – I ate rice earlier.
3. Future Tense
Future tense is shown using "akan" (will) before the verb. It indicates that an action will take place.
Example Sentences:
Saya akan makan nasi. – I will eat rice.
Dia akan datang esok. – He/She will come tomorrow.
Kami akan pergi ke pasar. – We will go to the market.
Note: You can also add words like "esok" (tomorrow) or "nanti" (later) to clarify that an action is happening in the future.
