Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)- Average blood pressure in Aorta

MAP=COxPR

CO (cardiac output)- Amount of blood pumped by heart per minute

CO=SVxHR

SV (stroke volume)- Blood volume per heartbeat

HR(heartrate)= beats per minute

Cardiac reserve- Difference between CO at rest and maximum CO

Intrinsic regulation- the heart regulating itself (results from normal functional characteristics)

Preload (Starling’s law of the heart)- The amount of stretch of the ventricular walls. the greater the stretch(preload), the greater the force of contraction

Afterload- Pressure the contracting ventricle must produce to overcome the pressure in the aorta and move blood into the aorta

Extrinsic regulation- external factors

1. parasympathetic stimulation
2. sympathetic simulation
3. hormonal control

Baroreceptors- monitor blood pressure

Chemoreceptors- monitor oxygen levels
