Self-Esteem vs. Self-Compassion

Problems with focusing on self-esteem include social comparison, which can lead to bullying behaviors and narcissism, and its instability, as it tends to abandon individuals during failure or rejection. In contrast, self-compassion offers a stable sense of self-worth derived from acknowledging oneself as a flawed human being, providing consistent support through difficulties. The primary reason people resist self-compassion is the misconception that it will undermine motivation. However, harsh self-criticism, similar to harsh punishment, actually leads to nervousness, fear of failure, undermines confidence, and prevents learning from mistakes due to shame.
