Switches vs. WiFi Routers
Switches vs. WiFi Routers
Physical Differences
Switch:
- Multiple ports (e.g., 8 or more) for LAN and WAN cables.
- Designed to handle numerous wired connections.
WiFi Router:
- Fewer LAN ports, typically around 3-4.
- One designated WAN port to connect to the internet.
Cable Types
LAN Cable (UTP):
- Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable.
- No gold covering/protection on the connector.
LAN Cable (STP):
- Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cable.
- Gold-protected connector for better signal quality and reduced interference.
Identifying Ports on a WiFi Router
- Ports are typically labeled to distinguish between LAN and WAN connections.
- WAN: Connects to the internet source.
- LAN: Connects to local network devices.
