Switches vs. WiFi Routers

Switches vs. WiFi Routers

Physical Differences

  • Switch:

    • Multiple ports (e.g., 8 or more) for LAN and WAN cables.
    • Designed to handle numerous wired connections.
  • WiFi Router:

    • Fewer LAN ports, typically around 3-4.
    • One designated WAN port to connect to the internet.

Cable Types

  • LAN Cable (UTP):

    • Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable.
    • No gold covering/protection on the connector.
  • LAN Cable (STP):

    • Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cable.
    • Gold-protected connector for better signal quality and reduced interference.

Identifying Ports on a WiFi Router

  • Ports are typically labeled to distinguish between LAN and WAN connections.
    • WAN: Connects to the internet source.
    • LAN: Connects to local network devices.
