3:"Genesis"

Story number one of Genesis highlights multiple important ideas: one is the creation of the earth, and how god created all living things in 6 days. He took each day to create something specific about the earth. The story also highlights the importance of being human. God created humans "in God's image" (Genesis 1:27) meaning that we in body the image of God and must own up to his image. The flowing quotes from the text, states the responsibility of humans "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky..." (Genesis 1:26)." He made humans the most powerful out of all the creations he made on the earth. We as humans must respect god and earth, and most importantly protect God's creation.We are to do it by using the quality that God gave us, which is the ability to think and make a destination. Chapter 3 takes place in a garden named "Eden" 2:8. In this chapter we are introduced with the first women, man, and serpent. The first man named Adam, the woman named Eve. The Serpent who is an evil deceiver who convinced Eve to eat from the tree that god has prohibited her from eating form. God has told her that she is able to eat from all the other apple trees, except one tree and Eva and her husband are prohibited from eating from. Serpent told her that she should eat from the tree and she would have power just like god. Eve eats from the tree and also gives her husband, even though God has told them they are unable to eat from the tree. In the text God's question, "Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" (Genesis 3:11). This quote highlats story show how humans are not perfect and it's in our nature to make mistakes. In chapter 6-8 of Noah, God flooded the earth about approximately 1650 years after the world was created. God has decided to "wipe from the face of the earth the human race" (Genesis 6:7). This is due to wickedness and violence during the time, God was not happy with everything that was going on with the earth. Many humans did not believe in gods and disobeyed him. On the other hand Noah lived morally and always believed in god, therefore god instructed him to build an ark to save himself and his family. He and his family were saved and did not die during the flood. God then says that he will not destroy the earth again with water. This story shows how humans make choices that lead to severe consequences but there is always hope for a better start again as long as humans live a righteous life.

  • The Bible does not require believers to accept specific scientific details. Instead, it may simply emphasize that the world was created by a divine force, without a literal description of how.

Purpose of Genesis

  • Genesis serves a historical and cultural purpose.

  • It was written during the Babylonian exile, a time when the Jewish people were influenced by and reacting to other cultures.

  • Comparison with Enuma Elish: Genesis shares some similarities with the Babylonian creation story, Enuma Elish, but there are significant differences:

    • In Genesis, humans are not created as an afterthought or accident.

    • Genesis responds to surrounding cultures' creation myths, sometimes borrowing elements but primarily reshaping major themes to distinguish the Jewish understanding of God and the human person.
