Temperament Categories and Analogies

Temperament Types in Infants

  • Easy Baby (Category One):

    • Characterized by being generally happy and adaptable to new situations.

    • Infants in this category readily engage with new people and environments without distress.

  • Slow to Warm Up Baby (Category Two):

    • Initial reluctance or discomfort in new situations or with unfamiliar people.

    • They tend to hold back initially, often leaning on a parent or caregiver.

    • However, with time and comfort, these infants gradually adapt and begin to behave similarly to an easy baby, becoming more comfortable and exploratory.

  • Difficult Baby:

    • Expresses significant discomfort and unhappiness in new situations.

    • Dislikes strangers and unfamiliar environments.

    • They are particular about routines (e.g., eating, sleeping) and become distressed if these are disrupted.

Adult Analogies for Temperament Types

These infant temperament categories can be understood through adult responses to a social event, such as a party:

  • Easy Adult: Responds to an invitation with enthusiasm (
