Be prepared to explain one element readers should pay attention to when trying to understand

a story.

Elements you may discuss

● Character behavior or motivation - it shows what they want, and their personality. This explains why things happen, helps readers predict outcomes, gain empathy, and grasp the deeper messages an author might be conveying about justice, morality, or the consequences of certain desires.

● Conflict- drives the plot, and reveals the characters true nature. It allows the readers to feal empathy and understand the challenges the characters undergo.

● Tone- It allows the reader to understand the characters emotions. It also shows the authors intent, and allows the reader to get the deeper meaning.

● Mood- helps set the mood of the story and allows the reader to imagine the set and imagery in the story

● Point of view- it impacts the readers empathy and feelings to the story and other characters.

● Setting- it provides context, and allows the reader to understand the characters actions.

● Structure- This unfolds the plot in a way that benefits the storyline and highlights the big ideas

● Patterns or repetition- shows pacing and emphasizes themes and big ideas.

● Shifts in emotion or focus- it shows the reader that a big moment is going to happen and it shows a scene change

● Imagery

● Symbolism

● Foreshadowing

● Juxtaposition- pacing of two elements

● Word choice

Consider:

● Why does this element matter?

● How does noticing it help readers understand deeper meaning?

Be prepared to reflect on one thing you pay attention to now that you did not notice earlier in the

year.

Possible areas of growth:

● Looking for theme / analyzing instead of summarizing

● Asking why characters act the way they do

● Noticing tone or mood

● Paying attention to patterns

● Making inferences

● Thinking about author purpose

● Explaining why details matter
