The Hydrological Cycle and Its Processes

  • The hydrological cycle is a continuous sequence of processes that ensure water is naturally replenished on Earth.

  • A catchment is a specific area that receives water and contributes that water to rivers; it is the fundamental unit of the hydrological cycle.

  • Precipitation occurs when water falls to the Earth's surface as rain or, if the air temperature is cold enough, as snow.

  • Infiltration is the process by which water enters the ground or the soil from the surface.

  • Percolation refers to the downward flow of water through the soil and into the groundwater due to the force of gravity.

  • Groundwater is water that has seeped into the ground; it may be absorbed by plant roots or stored in underground reservoirs. This includes specific components:

    • Water Table: The upper level of the underground surface in which the soil or rocks are permanently saturated with water.

    • Groundwater Flow: The movement of water through the subsurface layers.

  • Surface Runoff is the flow of water over the ground surface, moving from highlands into streams, tributaries, and rivers. This occurs when the ground is saturated or impermeable.

  • Evaporation is the process where the Sun's heat causes liquid water to change into water vapour.

  • Transpiration involves plants giving out water vapour into the atmosphere through their leaves.

  • Condensation occurs as warm, moist air rises and cools. During this process:

    • Water vapour changes back into liquid water droplets.

    • Small droplets combine to form larger droplets.

    • Large amounts of these gathered water droplets form clouds.

  • River systems are composed of a river source (the start of the river), tributaries (smaller streams that flow into a main river), and a river mouth (where the river enters a larger body of water).

  • A flood is defined as an overflow of a large amount of water onto land that is normally dry.

  • Flash Floods:

    • Caused by exceptionally heavy rainfall over a short duration of time.

    • Frequently occur in dry areas lacking sufficient soil or vegetation to facilitate infiltration.

    • Rainwater quickly becomes surface runoff, flooding low-lying areas rapidly.

  • River Floods:

    • Typically caused by sustained heavy rainfall over a long period or meltwater produced by melting snow and ice during the spring season.

    • Increased water volumes enter streams and tributaries, flowing into main rivers.

    • The water level in rivers rises rapidly until it overflows the banks and inundates the surrounding areas.

  • The process of a river flood follows three stages:

    • Stage 11: An area receives excessive rain over a sustained period.

    • Stage 22: A large volume of water enters the river system.

    • Stage 33: The water level rises quickly, causing the river to overflow its banks.

Characteristics and Causes of Droughts

  • A drought is a lung period of little or no rainfall in a specific area, lasting for months or even years.

  • During a drought, an area becomes significantly drier than normal, and there is insufficient water to replenish what is lost through human activities, evaporation, and transpiration.

  • Consequential effects include the drying up of major water stores such as reservoirs and groundwater.

  • The process of a drought follows three stages:

    • Stage 11: An area receives very little rain over a long period.

    • Stage 22: Rainwater is insufficient to replenish the river.

    • Stage 33: The water level in the river drops gradually until the river eventually runs dry.

River Ecosystems and Food Chains

  • River ecosystems consist of communities of plants and animals found in rivers that interact with one another. Precipitation is vital as it provides a regular water supply to sustain these organisms.

  • A food chain illustrates the relationships among organisms and the transfer of energy through food consumption. Predators obtain energy by eating prey.

  • Phytoplankton:

    • Located at the bottom of the aquatic food chain.

    • These are aquatic plants that obtain energy from sunlight through the process of photosynthesis.

    • They release oxygen into the water.

  • Zooplankton:

    • Small aquatic animals that feed on phytoplankton.

  • Aquatic Insects:

    • Feed on zooplankton.

  • Fish:

    • Insects are eaten by small fish.

    • Small fish are subsequently eaten by large fish.

  • Humans:

    • Positioned at the top of the aquatic food chain, consuming large fish.
