Respiration

  • Energy is the ability to do work

  • Work is done when the body is moving

  • Chemical energy is in our food

  • Mostly carbohydrates that break down to glucose is used for respiration

  • Respiration

    • the release of energy from our cells
  • Cellular respiration

    • respiration in the cells
  • Aerobic respiration

    • respiration in the presence of oxygen
    • Used by most organisms
  • Anaerobic respiration

    • respiration done without oxygen
    • some micro organisms prefer this way
    • If human cells do this you get cramps: lactic acid

A lot of energy is released during respiration

Aerobic Respiration

Word equation

Glucose + oxygen => energy + carbon dioxide + water

Chemical equation

C6H12O6 + 6O2 => 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy

Anaerobic Respiration

  • There’s much less energy released in anaerobic respiration

Using yeast

Glucose => energy + alcohol (ethanol) + carbon dioxide

The CO2 can rise bread or the ethanol can make alcohol

In animals/humans

Glucose => energy + lactic acid

lactic acid: cramps

Factors effecting respiration

  • How available glucose is
  • How available oxygen is
  • Temperature
