Respiration
Energy is the ability to do work
Work is done when the body is moving
Chemical energy is in our food
Mostly carbohydrates that break down to glucose is used for respiration
Respiration
- the release of energy from our cells
Cellular respiration
- respiration in the cells
Aerobic respiration
- respiration in the presence of oxygen
- Used by most organisms
Anaerobic respiration
- respiration done without oxygen
- some micro organisms prefer this way
- If human cells do this you get cramps: lactic acid
A lot of energy is released during respiration
Aerobic Respiration
Word equation
Glucose + oxygen => energy + carbon dioxide + water
Chemical equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 => 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
Anaerobic Respiration
- There’s much less energy released in anaerobic respiration
Using yeast
Glucose => energy + alcohol (ethanol) + carbon dioxide
The CO2 can rise bread or the ethanol can make alcohol
In animals/humans
Glucose => energy + lactic acid
lactic acid: cramps
