Overview of Cognitive Development
Cognitive development = study of how humans come to perceive, imagine, think, reason, solve problems, and generate knowledge.
Mini-lecture focuses on two major theorists:
Jean Piaget → structural/stage theory.
Lev Vygotsky → sociocultural approach (presented near the end).
Central debate: Does cognitive growth occur in discrete qualitative stages (Piaget) or as a continuous, socially scaffolded process (Vygotsky & other models)?
Piaget’s Structural Theory (Stage Theory)
Piaget: Swiss genetic epistemologist; pioneer in providing the first systematic account of children’s thinking.
Posits qualitative shifts rather than simple quantitative accumulation of skills.
Three foundational tenets:
Schemas.
Adaptation processes (assimilation & accommodation).
Discrete universal stages of development.
Schemas (Building Blocks of Cognition)
Definition: "Webs" of organised knowledge about one specific aspect (object, action, or abstract idea).
Contain beliefs, past experiences, and expectations regarding their target.
Functions:
Form internal mental models.
Guide perception, prediction, and action.
Developmental trajectory:
Present in infancy; become more numerous & complex with age.
Example progression:
Infant schema: Bird = things that fly + wings + beaks.
Adult schemas: Pigeon, pelican, owl, etc. (multiple exemplar-level schemas nested under the abstract bird schema).
Equilibration:
Equilibrium → schemas successfully explain current experience → cognitive comfort.
Disequilibrium → mismatch between schema & environment → discomfort → triggers adaptation.
Adaptation Processes
Assimilation: Re-using an existing schema to incorporate new information.
E.g., Baby with a "dog" schema (family has two dogs) sees a bulldog. Similar features (four legs, "woof"). → Adds bulldog to existing dog schema ⇒ assimilation.
Accommodation: Creating or drastically modifying a schema when information cannot be “fit in.”
Baby encounters a cat (four legs & tail, but "meow"). Cannot assimilate → constructs a new "cat" schema ⇒ accommodation.
Adaptation ≈ continuous interplay of assimilation ↔ accommodation, driven by the need to restore equilibrium.
The Four Stages of Cognitive Development
Universal sequence; each stage builds on the previous one.

Cognition based on sensory impressions & motor actions.
Starts with reflexes (sucking, biting, grasping, banging) → progresses to intentional exploration.
Infants imitate facial expressions & gestures from a very early age.

Early sensorimotor: "out of sight = out of existence."
Later sensorimotor: Understand that hidden objects still exist.
No internal symbols or mental representations at the outset; these emerge late in this stage.

Key cognitive limitations:

Centration → focus on one salient aspect, ignoring others.
Irreversibility → inability to mentally reverse transformations.
Failure of conservation:
Cannot grasp that quantity, number, matter, or length stays constant despite perceptual transformation (demonstrated via Piaget’s conservation tasks—liquid, mass, number, length).
E.g., Equal water poured into a taller, thinner glass ⇒ child judges the taller glass to “have more.”

Thought becomes logical and rule-based—but only with concrete objects/events.
Gains:
Mastery of conservation (all task types) via reversibility understanding.
Decline in egocentrism; appreciate different perspectives.
Ability to classify objects into hierarchies & seriate (order) them.
Limitations: Difficulty with purely abstract or hypothetical concepts; reasoning tied to the "here-and-now." Cannot easily envision remote future/past.

Emergence of abstract, systematic, & hypothetical-deductive reasoning.
Capabilities:
Think about possibilities, ideals, morality, love, justice.

Not all individuals may reach or consistently use formal operations.
Criticisms of Piaget
Stage model may exaggerate discontinuity; evidence for more gradual, domain-specific change.
Underestimates infants & young children (they show competencies earlier with simpler tasks).
Overestimates adolescents/adults (not everyone attains formal operations).
Task demands / experimenter influence: Children may answer to please adults (e.g., conservation tasks).
Insufficient attention to sociocultural context & cross-cultural variability.
Alternative & Complementary Approaches
Psychometric (IQ & standardized testing) → quantifies ability levels.
Learning theory / Behaviorism → mechanisms of conditioning & reinforcement.
Information-Processing → emphasis on memory, attention, processing speed.
Sociocultural perspective → social environment & cultural tools shape cognition (leads directly to Vygotsky).
These models often portray continuous rather than staged change and can be integrated with or opposed to Piaget.
Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory
Central premise: Social interaction + culture = engine of cognitive development.
"Community & interaction play a central role in making meaning." Learning is fundamentally a social, collaborative act.
Cooperative/Collaborative Dialogue
More Knowledgeable Other (MKO) = parent, teacher, older peer, or skilled tutor who guides the child.
Learning process: MKO models → child observes → internalises → self-regulates performance.
Example: Father helping daughter with first jigsaw; demonstrates strategies (find corners/edges), hands her pieces, praises success; gradually withdraws support as competence grows (scaffolding).
Culture & Tools of Intellectual Adaptation
Culture determines which cognitive tools/strategies are valued & taught.
Western school culture → note-taking.
Pre-literate societies → knot-tying, pebble counting, oral repetition, etc.
Even solitary cognitive acts are socioculturally mediated.
Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)
Definition: Distance between what a learner can do unaided and what they can do with expert guidance.
Illustrated as a continuum from solo capability → collaborative potential.
Instruction should target the ZPD for maximum developmental impact; skills first executed socially become internalised for independent use.
Peer collaboration likewise leverages ZPD (more capable peers scaffold less capable ones).
Learning Before Development
Contrasts with Piaget: Vygotsky argues that instruction precedes and catalyses developmental change (“learning leads development”).
Practical, Philosophical & Ethical Implications
Education:
Piaget → design activities matched to stage (hands-on exploration for sensorimotor/pre-operational; logic puzzles for concrete operational; debates/scientific inquiry for formal operational).
Vygotsky → emphasize mentorship, dialogue, scaffolding, collaborative classrooms.
Assessment: Beware of cultural bias; account for ZPD rather than raw independent performance.
Intervention: Early support & enriched social environments may accelerate development; ignoring cultural context risks inappropriate expectations.
Ethics: Avoid labelling children “deficient” when a task is culturally incongruent or beyond their current ZPD.
