Adaptation Processes
  • Assimilation: Re-using an existing schema to incorporate new information.

    • E.g., Baby with a "dog" schema (family has two dogs) sees a bulldog. Similar features (four legs, "woof"). → Adds bulldog to existing dog schema ⇒ assimilation.

  • Accommodation: Creating or drastically modifying a schema when information cannot be “fit in.”

    • Baby encounters a cat (four legs & tail, but "meow"). Cannot assimilate → constructs a new "cat" schema ⇒ accommodation.

  • Adaptation ≈ continuous interplay of assimilation accommodation, driven by the need to restore equilibrium.

The Four Stages of Cognitive Development
