Heart

Path of Blood
  1. Systemic Circulation:

    • Blood travels from the heart to the body and back.

    • Arteries: Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart.

    • Veins: Return deoxygenated blood to the heart.

  2. Pulmonary Circulation:

    • Blood travels from the heart to the lungs and back.

    • Pulmonary Artery: Carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.

    • Pulmonary Vein: Carries oxygenated blood back to the heart.

Parts of the Heart
  1. Atria:

    • Upper chambers that receive blood.

    • Right Atrium: Receives deoxygenated blood from the body.

    • Left Atrium: Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.

  2. Ventricles:

    • Lower chambers that pump blood out.

    • Right Ventricle: Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.

    • Left Ventricle: Pumps oxygenated blood to the body; strongest chamber.

  3. Valves:

    • Prevent backflow of blood.

    • Atrioventricular (AV) Valves:

      • Tricuspid Valve: Between the right atrium and right ventricle.

      • Mitral (Bicuspid) Valve: Between the left atrium and left ventricle.

    • Semilunar Valves:

      • Pulmonary Valve: Between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.

      • Aortic Valve: Between the left ventricle and aorta.

Cardiovascular System
  1. Arteries:

    • Carry blood away from the heart.

    • Aorta: Largest artery, carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle.

    • Arterioles: Smaller branches of arteries.

  2. Veins:

    • Carry blood back to the heart.

    • Vena Cava: Largest vein, returns deoxygenated blood to the right atrium.

      • Superior Vena Cava: Returns blood from the upper body.

      • Inferior Vena Cava: Returns blood from the lower body.
