Syntactic Structure and Predicate Complements
Internal Relations within the Sentence (Relaciones Internas)
Section 1.2: Relaciones Internas: This section focuses on the structural and grammatical links that exist between components within a sentence or phrase.
Grouping of Words (Palabras de un mismo grupo): Sentences are composed of words that belong to the same functional or semantic group. These groupings determine how words interact with one another to convey a unified meaning.
Order and Concordance (Orden y Concordancia): Proper sentence structure depends on maintaining grammatical agreement between words. * Gender (): Words within a group must agree in terms of being masculine or feminine. * Number (): Words within a group must agree in terms of being singular or plural.
Predicate Complements (Los Complementos del Predicato)
Nature of Complements: Predicates are not uniform; they can possess various types of complements depending entirely on the nature and requirements of the verb being used.
Verb Dependencies: The verb acts as the core of the predicate, and its specific meaning determines what kind of additional information (complements) is necessary for the sentence to be grammatically complete or meaningful.
Classification of Verbs based on Complement Requirements
Verbs Requiring Prepositional Complements: Certain verbs are syntactically tied to specific prepositions. * These are referred to as verbs that require a Prepositional Complement (). * In Spanish grammar, this specific type of complement is often known as the Complemento de R\u00e9gimen. * The transcript notes: "Se llama a…" (referring to the naming of this specific prepositional requirement).
Verbs Requiring Direct Objects: These are typically transitive verbs that require an object to receive the action directly. * In these instances, the verb requires what is termed a Direct Complement ().
Additional Complement Types
- Circumstantial Complement (): * Beyond the essential complements required by the verb (like the Direct or Prepositional complements), additional information can be appended to the sentence. * The Circumstantial Complement () can be added to provide context regarding the time, place, mode, or cause of the action, even if the verb does not strictly "demand" it for grammatical completeness.
