Endothermic:

  • Energy in > energy out

  • Absorbs energy; surroundings are colder

  • The system gains energy, surroundings lose it

  • Energy is a reactant

Exothermic:

  • Energy out > energy in

  • Emits energy; surroundings are warmer

  • The surroundings gain energy, system loses it

  • Energy is a product
