• Most Trek-Boers were poor and lived simple lives. The made most of the things they needed.

• The bought gunpowder, guns, tea, coffee, sugar and cotton cloth from travelling traders (smous) who visited the area once or twice a year.

• The traded cattle, sheep and animal skins for these tools.

• They moved often and did not plant crops

• They were nomadic

• they had large families

Education

• Trekboers were not educated.

• Their children did not go to school.

• Families were isolated and were self reliant.
