Properties of Water and Electronegativity
The Importance of Water
Water is crucial to all living things.
Properties of Water
Water is made of 3 atoms: 1 oxygen atom and 2 hydrogen atoms.
The atoms are formed together through covalent bonding.
Water utilizes hydrogen bonding.
Electronegativity: The ability to attract electrons.
Fluorine, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms are electronegative because they are high in electrons.
Hydrogen Bonding
A type of chemical bond between hydrogen and one of FON atoms (fluorine, oxygen, or nitrogen).
To remember the 3 electronegative atoms use FON (Fluorine, Oxygen, Nitrogen).
It causes the creation of positive and negative dipole within a molecule.
Dipole
When an electronegative atom pulls electrons toward itself, that atom becomes more negative.
Occurs due to an unequal sharing of electrons between atoms in a molecule.
A charged molecule.
