Types of Immune Responses

  • Innate Immune System

    • First line of defense against pathogens.
    • Non-specific response that does not adapt or improve with subsequent exposures.
    • Examples include: physical barriers (skin, mucous membranes), chemical barriers (antimicrobial proteins), and cellular defenses (phagocytes like macrophages and neutrophils).
  • Adaptive Immune Defense

    • Aimed at specific pathogens.
    • It develops over time after exposure to specific antigens.
    • Examples include B cells (which produce antibodies) and T cells (which destroy infected cells).

Primary vs. Secondary Immune Responses

  • Primary Immune Response

    • Characteristics:
    • Produces antibodies within five to ten days of exposure to antigens.
    • This response is crucial for initial defense against pathogens but is slower.
    • Usually occurs the first time a specific antigen is encountered, primarily involving naive B cells that differentiate into plasma cells that secrete antibodies.
  • Secondary Immune Response

    • Characteristics:
    • Produces antibodies within a day or two of subsequent exposure to the same antigen.
    • This rapid response is due to the presence of memory cells that were created during the primary response.
    • It is critical to the body’s ability to quickly fend off repeated infections by the same pathogen.

Importance of Immune Responses

  • Adaptive Immunity:
    • Enhances the body’s ability to protect itself and offers long-term immunity through memory cells.

Development of Immune Responses

    • Primary immune response can occur in children as they encounter pathogens for the first time.
    • Secondary immune responses are particularly important in adults, who have often been exposed to various pathogens and thus have established immune memory.
