In an ecosystem, energy and matter circulate through complex feeding relationships represented by food webs. Trophic Levels and Biomass Distribution

The Essential Role of Decomposers in the Ecosystem

While not always visible in a standard food web diagram, bacteria and other microorganisms play an indispensable role in maintaining the health and sustainability of an ecosystem. Bacteria function as decomposers, or saprotrophs, responsible for breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, including fallen leaves from green plants and the carcasses of dead animals like antelopes, cheetahs, or lions.

Through the process of decomposition, bacteria release complex organic compounds back into the environment in the form of simple inorganic nutrients, such as nitrates, phosphates, and potassium. This nutrient recycling ensures that the soil remains fertile, allowing green plants to continue the cycle of production. Without the action of bacteria, dead matter and waste would accumulate indefinitely, and the essential chemical elements required for life would become depleted, leading to the eventual collapse of the ecosystem.
