Cerebral Lobes Study Notes

CEREBRAL LOBES

LOBE

Frontal Lobe
  • LOCATION:

    • Anterior cranial fossa

  • FUNCTION:

    • Responsible for abstract thought.

    • Controls voluntary muscle movement.

    • Specifically, the fibers controlling voluntary movements are located in the precentral gyrus.

Parietal Lobe
  • LOCATION:

    • Situated in the upper region of the brain, positioned between the frontal and occipital lobes.

  • FUNCTION:

    • Receives sensations such as pain, pressure, temperature, and touch.

    • These sensory inputs are processed in the postcentral gyrus.

    • Formulates appropriate reactions for speech.

Temporal Lobe
  • LOCATION:

    • Located in the middle cranial fossa, with the lateral fissure separating it from the frontal and parietal lobes.

  • FUNCTION:

    • Receives and processes auditory stimuli.

    • Possibly involved in aspects of recent memory.

Occipital Lobe
  • LOCATION:

    • Found in the upper part of the posterior cranial fossa.

  • FUNCTION:

    • Primarily responsible for vision.

Insula
  • LOCATION:

    • Situated deep to the temporal lobe.

  • FUNCTION:

    • The specific functions of the insula remain unknown.
