What is Pressure?

Units of Pressure

•  Pascal (Pa): The basic unit of pressure.

Pressure in Fluids (Liquids and Gases)

•  Pressure in a Fluid: The deeper you go in a liquid, the more pressure there is because of the weight of the liquid above.

Important Points

1.  Hydrostatic Pressure: The pressure at a certain depth in a liquid depends on how deep you are.

2.  Atmospheric Pressure: The pressure from the air around us. At sea level, it's about 101,325 Pa (or 101.3 kPa).


Everyday Examples

•  Syringes: When you push the plunger, you increase pressure. This pressure forces liquid out.

•  Hydraulic Systems: Like in car lifts, where applying pressure in one area causes movement in another area due to liquid.


Devices to Measure Pressure

•  Barometer: Measures atmospheric pressure (like how much weight the air is applying).

•  Manometer: Measures gas pressure and lets us see how it compares to atmospheric pressure.


What Affects Pressure?

•  Depth: More depth means more pressure. The deeper you go, the heavier the water above pushes down.

•  Density: Thicker liquids push harder at the same depth than lighter fluids (like oil vs. water).
