Supervised Driving Log Requirements and Guidelines
Supervised Driving Log Requirements
Overview
Effective January 1, 2015, legislation mandates that all drivers under the age of 18 must submit a supervised driving log when completing behind-the-wheel instruction and applying for a provisional driver’s license.
Parent/Guardian Options
Parents or guardians have two options regarding the supervision of their teen's driving log:
Option 1: Supplemental Parent Class
- Parents/guardians may complete a supplemental parent class provided by an approved driver education program in Minnesota.
- Following attendance, they must submit:
- The supplemental parent class certificate.
- A supervised driving log that shows their teen has completed at least 40 hours (2,400 minutes) of supervised driving.
- Out of the 40 hours, 15 hours (900 minutes) must be night driving.
Option 2: No Supplemental Parent Class
- If parents/guardians choose not to complete the supplemental parent class, the supervised driving log must indicate that the teen has completed:
- A minimum of 50 hours (3,000 minutes) of supervised driving.
- At least 15 hours (900 minutes) of these hours must also be nighttime hours.
Encouragement for Additional Driving Practice
- It is encouraged that parents/guardians provide additional driving hours beyond the minimum requirements. This not only helps meet the legal requirements but also assists in better preparing the teen to become a safe driver.
Submission Requirements
- The completed driving log must be presented at the time of the road test and submitted with the application for the provisional license.
- Only logs completed on the official Supervised Driving Log template will be accepted; logs filled out on any other document are deemed invalid.
Affirmation by Parent/Guardian
- The supervising parent or guardian must affirm that they have supervised the teen driver for the majority of the required driving hours and that the hours documented have been driven as stated.
