Alternate Pathways

VOCAB

beta-oxidation → a process in which fatty acids are broken down into acetyl-CoA through catabolism

Ketosis → a metabolic state that occurs when your body burns fat for energy instead of glucose

ketone bodies → produced by the liver and used peripherally as an energy source when glucose is not readily available

deamination → breaking off the amine group in amino group

transaminated → when the amine group is transferred rather than deanimated

Beta-oxidation → two carbon atoms are removed in the form of acetyl-CoA from acyl-CoA at the carboxyl-terminal

I can explain lipid and protein metabolism

Lipid Metabolism

Protein Metabolism

  • favoured by cells with high energy needs → heart, skeletal muscle, adipose

  • not a favoured pathway in any cell

  • used in starvation situations for energy production

1. Triglycerides are broken down into glycerol and fatty acid chains → glycerol enters glycolysis

2. Fatty acids begin B-oxidation → goes through a series of rx to convert end 2 C into acetyl-CoA

  • Will repeat until there is no carbon left

1. protein is broken down into amino acids

2. removal of amino groups (deamination) → converts into urea

3. carbon skeleton enters cellular respiration

  • happens in the liver and sometimes in muscle tissue

I can identify tissues that use particular pathways

  • muscles → amino acids (p metabolism)

  • Adipose tissue → triglyceride (L metabolism)

  • liver → beta-oxidation
