Sengoku Period (ca. 1467-1568)
- Long period of civil war with decentralized power (there is no single centralized authority that makes decisions on behalf of all the parties. Instead each party, also called a peer, makes local autonomous decisions towards its individual goals which may possibly conflict with those of other peers)

- Lords who tried to suppress the peasant riots
- (in feudal Japan) one of the great lords who were vassals of the shogun.
