Insulin Preparations
1. Soluble (Regular) Insulin
Only preparation suitable for intravenous use.
Administered in diabetic emergencies.
Given subcutaneously before meals for chronic management.
2. Formulations of Human Insulins
Available in various ratios of short-acting and longer-lasting forms (e.g., 30:70).
Commonly used twice daily.
Some marketed in prefilled injection devices ('pens') for patient convenience.
3. Administration Details
Small doses of soluble insulin control hyperglycemia post-injection.
Risk of hypoglycemia in early morning hours.
For a two-dose regimen :
Two-thirds of daily dose before breakfast.
One-third before evening meal.
If patient engages in strenuous work, morning dose is reduced to prevent exercise-induced hypoglycemia.
