Insulin Preparations

1. Soluble (Regular) Insulin

  • Only preparation suitable for intravenous use.

  • Administered in diabetic emergencies.

  • Given subcutaneously before meals for chronic management.

2. Formulations of Human Insulins

  • Available in various ratios of short-acting and longer-lasting forms (e.g., 30:70).

  • Commonly used twice daily.

  • Some marketed in prefilled injection devices ('pens') for patient convenience.

3. Administration Details

  • Small doses of soluble insulin control hyperglycemia post-injection.

  • Risk of hypoglycemia in early morning hours.

  • For a two-dose regimen :

    • Two-thirds of daily dose before breakfast.

    • One-third before evening meal.

  • If patient engages in strenuous work, morning dose is reduced to prevent exercise-induced hypoglycemia.
