Types of Aerial Stem Modifications:
Tendrils: Specialized for climbing.
Thorns: Provide protection against herbivores.
Cladodes: Modified stems that perform photosynthesis and replace leaves.
Sub-Aerial Stems
Stolons (Runners):
Definition: Modified lateral stems that grow horizontally across the ground.
Example: Common in strawberries and violets.
Structure:
Internode: The long, skinny section.
Node: The point where roots and leaves emerge.
Function: Allows for self-propagation as new plants develop at nodes, while the internode can eventually disappear.
Practical Example: Strawberries growing stolons that reach the ground from elevated pots.
Underground Stems
Rhizomes:
Definition: Horizontal underground stems that often store starch.
Examples: Ginger and turmeric, along with many grasses.
Structure: Rhizomes have nodes and internodes, distinguishable from roots.
Function: Serve as storage organs and means of vegetative reproduction.
Tubers:
Definition: A type of underground stem modified for storage, commonly known for potatoes.
Characteristics: Exhibit nodes (eyes) from which new growth can emerge.
Utilization: Key for propagation; the eyes must be included for planting.
Bulbs:
Definition: Structurally comprised of a central stem surrounded by fleshy modified leaves.
Example: Onions, where the outer layers are papery, and inner layers are fleshy for storage.
Root System: Fuels growth through the fibrous root system originating from the bulb's base.
Corms:
Comparison: Similar to bulbs but consist of a solid stem base without multiple fleshy layers.
Structure: Thicker, solid stem structure with papery leaves.
Function: Also serve as storage organs for the plant.
Cladodes
Definition: Modified stems that photosynthesize in the absence of leaves.
Examples: Found in plants like Ephedra and horsetail.
Structure: Thick, green stems rich in chlorophyll function as the main photosynthetic organs.
Adaptation: Leaves often evolve into spines for reduced evaporation in arid environments.
