Promoting Proper Breathing

Incentive spirometry is crucial for increasing lung capacity. To effectively teach a patient:

  1. Positioning: Have the patient sit in a high-fowler's or semi-fowler's position.

    • If the patient wears dentures, ensure they are removed if loose; otherwise, they may remain if they fit well.

  2. Pain Assessment: Check for any pain the patient is experiencing, as pain can hinder their ability to use the spirometer.

    • Administer pain medications if needed to make the patient comfortable before proceeding.

  3. Using the Device:

    • Instruct the patient to hold the spirometer with one hand and the mouthpiece with the other, placing the mouthpiece close to their mouth.

    • They should exhale normally, then firmly place their lips around the mouthpiece.

    • Instruct them not to breathe through their nose. Instead, they should inhale slowly and deeply through the mouthpiece.

    • They need to hold their breath for about 3 to 5 seconds and check the gauge to see their progress.

    • After inhaling, they can remove the mouthpiece and exhale normally.

  4. Monitoring: Keep an eye on the patient for any signs of lightheadedness. The incentive spirometer should be used 5 to 10 times every 1 to 2 hours, allowing for rest between each inhalation to avoid dizziness.
