AP Stats unit 1
ABBREVIATIONS:
var: variable
cat: categorical
quan: quantitative
dist: distribution
marg: marginal
con: conditional distribution
gr: graph
bgr: bar graph
pgr: pie graph
TERMS
individuals: objects described by data
sample: percentage of a population used to survey
population: population being surveyed
variables: characteristics observed in individuals for a statistical purpose
cat var: places an individual in a group based on a var, eg. color of car
qual var:based on a number SPECIFICALLY to find a statistical average
distribution: the values the data takes and how often it takes them ; this includes the shape, center, and spread of the data set
two way dataset: represents two var of an individual
marginal distribution: the ratio of a var among all var, ex. ratio of red cars to all cars in dataset
conditional distribution: the dist of a var among individuals meeting a certain condition, ex. what portion of left handed people drive red cars
Data Representation:
Graphs should always start at 0. Pictorial graphs lead to misrepresentation of data. Only catvars can be represented by pgrs or bgrs. When representing margdist, percentages are better.
BGRs:
Must start at 0
Must be neat and equal in width
numbers must be evenly spaced
must be clearly labeled
Interpreting Data:
margdist:
find the percentage of the variable in comparison to the sample
part/whole=margdist%
10/100=10%
note: make sure I can find IQR/GATES
