Muscle Function

Identify muscles by function (ex. Biceps brachii – elbow flexion, zygomaticus major – smiling, etc) = be able to do this for all big ticket muscles

frontalis(raise eyebrows),

occipitalis(when contracts it pulls on the galea aponeurosis),

orbicularis oculi(blinking),

orbicularis oris(circular muscle that moves the lips),

 zygomaticus major(smiling),

temporalis(retracts the mandible to close the mouth),

sternocleidomastoid(laterally flexes and rotates the head),

 trapezius(stabilizes scapula),

latissimus dorsi(move the humerus inferiorly generally),

pectoralis major (move the humerus),

pectoralis minor (abduction of the scapula),

deltoid (abduction of the arm),

biceps brachii(elbow flexion),

brachialis(flex the arm),

triceps brachii (elbow extension),

rhomboid major (Scapular retraction),

rhomboid minor (Scapular retraction),

gracilis (Hip adduction),

gluteus maximus (Hip extension),

rectus femoris (Knee extension),

vastus lateralis (Knee extension),

vastus medialis (Knee extension),

vastus intermedius (Knee extension),

tensor fascia latte (flexing and abducting the thigh),

sartorius (Hip flexion),

biceps femoris (Knee flexion),

gastrocnemius (Plantar Flexion),

soleus (Plantar Flexion -important for standing and walking),

diaphragm (Primary muscle of respiration),

rectus abdominis(Trunk flexion -bending forward),

abdominal obliques(External & Internal – Trunk rotation),

transverse abdominis(core stabilization)
