Eukaryotic Nature of Animal Cells:
Animals are eukaryotes, which means their genetic material (DNA) is fully enclosed within a nucleus.
Function of the Nucleus:
The primary function of the nucleus is to enclose and contain the genetic material (DNA) of the cell.
Microscopic Observation and Staining:
Nuclei can be observed in animal cells, such as human cancer cells, using a light microscope.
Nuclei are naturally colorless; in microscope preparations, they are frequently stained blue to make them visible.
Cytoplasm and Cell Membrane
Cytoplasm Characteristics and Function:
The cytoplasm is a watery solution contained within the interior of the cell.
It serves as the site where chemical reactions take place within the cell.
A primary example of a biochemical process occurring in the cytoplasm is the first stage of respiration.
Cell Membrane Function:
The entire cell is enclosed by a cell membrane.
The cell membrane controls and regulates the movement of molecules that enter and leave the cell.
Mitochondria and Aerobic Respiration
Structure and Microscopic Visibility:
Mitochondria are smaller sub-cellular structures located inside the cytoplasm.
They cannot be viewed on standard unstained light microscope images because they are too small.
To visualize mitochondria under a light microscope, cells must be stained with a specific red dye.
Function of Mitochondria:
Mitochondria are the cellular sites where aerobic respiration takes place.
