Imperialist Japan Notes

In response to European nations becoming involved in their affairs in the early 1900s, by 1904 Japan had doubled the size of its army and gained self-sufficiency in the production of armaments.

During WWI Japan fought on the side of the British, U.S., Russia and France.

During and after World War I

There was a huge demand for Japanese steel and iron production.

Demand for textiles and foreign trade.

Stock prices sky rocketed.

o People became more wealthy.

Women's status rose.

The end of WWI halted demand for military products, munitions factories shut down and thousands of laborers were out of work.

The popular argument during Japan's depression for helping them out of this was that they

needed to conquer new territory to ward off mass starvation.

The rational behind Japan's belief that they faced injustices in regards to land was:

That other countries were not making the most of their land by achieving high per- acre yields that Japanese farmers had obtained.

Also felt it was unfair that countries such as Canada and the United States had such large areas of land to feed much smaller populations.

By 1925 Japan also enjoyed the benefit of after entering into a capital ship limitation treaty with the U.S., Great Britain, France and Italy, it gained a role as the world's third largest naval power.

In World War II wartime Japan, every boy was prepared to be a soldier.

The Japanese people were told they were superior and therefore invincible and that their emperor was a god.
