  • Importance: Communication connects people and their surroundings, allowing expression of thoughts and ideas.

  • Forms of Communication:

Communication Process

  • Communication is a process involving sharing and conveying messages between a sender and a receiver.

  • Expression: Can be through written or spoken words, actions (non-verbal), or a combination of both.

Seven Major Elements of the Communication Process

1. Source

  • The originator of the message attempting to share information.

2. Message

  • The actual information being communicated.

3. Encoding

  • Converting the message into understandable words, actions, or forms for the speaker.

4. Channel

  • The means of conveying the encoded message, which can be personal or non-personal, verbal or nonverbal.

5. Decoding

  • The interpretation of the encoded message by the receiver.

6. Receiver

  • The individual who receives and decodes the message.

7. Feedback

  • The responses, reactions, or information provided by the receiver in response to the message.

The Process of Communication

  1. The speaker generates an idea.

  2. The speaker encodes the idea into messages or actions.

  3. The speaker transmits the message.

  4. The receiver receives the message.

  5. The receiver decodes the message based on context.

  6. The receiver provides feedback.

Media Defined

  • Definition: Media consists of physical objects or channels used for communication, such as radio, television, computers, film, etc.

  • Types: Different forms of media include television, radio, newspapers, and the internet.

  • Historical Context: Print is one of the oldest media forms.

Impact of Media and Information on Communication

  • Technology advancements have changed communication through faster and easier access to various platforms and social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

  • Positive Aspects: Enhanced access to information and connectivity.

  • Negative Aspects:

    • Potential strain on personal relationships due to over-reliance on social media.

    • Risk of encountering fake news and hoaxes.

  • Advice: Practice critical usage by adhering to the principle "Think before you click".
