Canada's Response to the Great Depression

Canada did not intervene in the Great Depression as much as the US

conservative Bennet established relief camps and created Canada’s central bank, but cut spending, trusting in laissez faire

these policies did not solve the problem so then he started to implement policies similar to Roosevelt’s New Deal

then King was voted in as Prime Minister

King created social programs, leading to a modern welfare state and mixed economy

Through Howe, the minister of pretty much everything, King helped employ many people and established 28 Crown corporations in WWII to produce goods for the war effort

• this helped both the allies and the Canadian economy
