Canada's Response to the Great Depression

  • Canada did not intervene in the Great Depression as much as the US

  • conservative Bennet established relief camps and created Canada’s central bank, but cut spending, trusting in laissez faire

  • these policies did not solve the problem so then he started to implement policies similar to Roosevelt’s New Deal

  • then King was voted in as Prime Minister

  • King created social programs, leading to a modern welfare state and mixed economy

  • Through Howe, the minister of pretty much everything, King helped employ many people and established 28 Crown corporations in WWII to produce goods for the war effort

    • this helped both the allies and the Canadian economy
