Chapter 2: PC Assembly

2.1 Assemble the Computer

  • Build a computer using the following steps:

    • Define general and fire safety standards.

    • Connect the power supply.

    • Install motherboard components including the CPU, RAM, and expansion cards.

    • Install internal drives and identify additional storage options.

    • Connect all components with the appropriate cables.

General and Fire Safety Precautions

  • Important safety precautions include:

    • Remove watches or jewelry.

    • Turn off and unplug equipment before assembly.

    • Keep workspace clear of clutter.

    • Wear safety goggles where necessary.

    • Familiarize yourself with fire extinguisher usage.

Installing the Power Supply

  • Steps to install the power supply:

    1. Open the computer case.

    2. Align the power supply with screw holes and secure it.

  • Considerations for choosing the case and power supply:

    • Compatibility with motherboard form factor.

    • Adequate size for cooling.

    • Power supply wattage must match component requirements.

Installing Motherboard Components

  • CPU Installation:

    • Orient and lock the CPU into the CPU slot, apply thermal paste, and install the heatsink.

  • RAM Installation:

    • Open slot levers, orient RAM, and lock it in place.

  • Motherboard Installation:

    • Align motherboard with standoffs, install screws to secure it.

  • Compatibility Considerations:

    • Ensure motherboard supports CPU, RAM, and has compatible slots.

Installing Internal Drives

  • Hard Drive Installation Steps:

    1. Position HDD in the drive bay aligning connectors.

    2. Secure using screws.

  • Optical Drive Installation Steps:

    1. Choose a suitable drive bay.

    2. Insert optical drive and secure it.

Installing Adapter Cards

  • Types of adapter cards include graphics, sound, storage controller, and NIC.

  • Installation Process:

    1. Find the correct PCIe slot.

    2. Align, seat, and secure the adapter card.

Selecting Additional Storage

  • Internal Storage:

    • Replace drives based on performance signs or capacity needs.

  • External Storage:

    • USB flash drives for small data; external hard drives for larger backups.

Connecting Cables

  • Power Cables:

    • Connect primary and auxiliary power cables to the motherboard.

  • Data Cables:

    • Connect SATA cables from motherboard to drives.

  • Front Panel Connection:

    • Connect power, reset buttons, LEDs, audio, and USB cables to motherboard specifics.

Completing Assembly

  • Steps to finish assembly include:

    • Connect all external cables and secure the case.

    • Ensure no tools or loose parts remain inside the case.
