Wars in the West
War of 1812:
- USA vs GB
- Napoleonic Wars caused British policies that angered Americans
- America declared war and hoped to have Canada on its side
- America Assumed Canada would welcome the opportunity to throw off British rule
- Canadians fought alongside the British
- Isaac Brock worked with Indigenous people in upper Canada to fight off American armies in Detroit and Canada
- British troops captured northeast of USA
- After many small battles, and capturing towns, American troops retreated in November 1814
Indigenous People in the War of 1812:
- had a lot to contribute to the war
- The American revolution had taken lands in the west from Native Americans
- Tecumseh established a confederacy of native groups and defended themselves
- During the war, he allied with Brock to fight against the Americans
- Indigenous fighters contributed to significant victories
- Americans refused to give back land to the natives in treaty
- End of an era of self-determination as more Europeans settled for the west, taking more land
\ The Civil War (1861-1865):
- The Union (north) fought against the Confederates (south)
- border states of Kentucky, Missouri, Delaware, and Maryland allowed slavery and never left the US
- Civil war about slavery - both sides recognized slavery as the immediate cause of the war
- The Confederate government passed the first conscription act in American history, implemented national taxes, created a national currency, and had a government bureaucracy of 70,000 people
- the war was also about religion, for both sides
- The Union won the war: * had approx. 22 million people compared to 2 million in the south * north manufactured more than 90% of all goods in America * 20,000 miles of the railroad which made it easier to move armies
