Overview of Research Methods

The Scientific Method

  1. Defining the Problem

    • Understand how to define a specific area of interest.

    • It starts with an observation, leading to a question ("I wonder what…?").

  2. Creating a Hypothesis

    • Definition: A tentative statement regarding the expected relationship between variables.

    • Often misinterpreted as simply an educated guess; however, it needs to be more detailed.

    • Involves researching prior work to form a well-informed hypothesis.

    • Example Hypothesis: "Is there a relationship between sleep duration and metabolism?"

    • Key Characteristics of Hypothesis:

      • Testable: Must be possible to evaluate through experimentation.

      • Null Hypothesis: A statement of no relationship exists between the variables being studied.

  3. Replication in Research

    • Importance of others repeating the study with different researchers and samples.

    • Replication enhances the validity and reliability of research findings.

Ethical Considerations in Research

  1. Informed Consent

    • Participants must be fully informed about the study's purpose and processes.

Types of Research Designs

1. Case Studies

  • Noted distinction between case studies and case histories:

2. Sample Selection in Research
  • Population vs. Sample:

    • Population: Entire group being studied.

    • Sample: Subset of the population.

    • Matching: Pairing participants on critical characteristics to control variables.

3. Correlational Studies

Risk and Resilience Factors
  • Risk Factors: Characteristics associated with increased vulnerability to disorders (e.g., genetics, drug use).

  • Resilience Factors: Traits that reduce vulnerability or impact of stressors.
