Overview of Research Methods
Purpose of research methods in psychology and other scientific disciplines.
Emphasizes that the scientific method is universally applicable, not exclusive to psychology.
The Scientific Method
Defining the Problem
Understand how to define a specific area of interest.
It starts with an observation, leading to a question ("I wonder what…?").
Creating a Hypothesis
Definition: A tentative statement regarding the expected relationship between variables.
Often misinterpreted as simply an educated guess; however, it needs to be more detailed.
Involves researching prior work to form a well-informed hypothesis.
Example Hypothesis: "Is there a relationship between sleep duration and metabolism?"
Key Characteristics of Hypothesis:
Testable: Must be possible to evaluate through experimentation.
Null Hypothesis: A statement of no relationship exists between the variables being studied.
Replication in Research
Importance of others repeating the study with different researchers and samples.
Replication enhances the validity and reliability of research findings.
Ethical Considerations in Research
Informed Consent
Participants must be fully informed about the study's purpose and processes.
They should have the opportunity to ask questions before signing consent forms.
Confidentiality: Researchers must ensure information remains private and not linked to individuals when published.
Voluntary Participation: Participants can opt out of the study whenever they wish.
Example from psychology courses: Students could choose to write papers instead of participating in studies.
Types of Research Designs
1. Case Studies
Involves in-depth study of one or two individuals.
Noted distinction between case studies and case histories:
Case Study: Direct study of a person.
Case History: General background information about a person.
Good for understanding rare disorders but limited in generalizability.
2. Sample Selection in Research
Population vs. Sample:
Population: Entire group being studied.
Sample: Subset of the population.
Representative sample: Should mirror characteristics of the population.
Random Sampling: Ensures no bias in selection.
Matching: Pairing participants on critical characteristics to control variables.
3. Correlational Studies
Investigates relationships between continuous variables.
Examples of continuous variables: Age, intelligence, weight.
Examples of categorical variables: Religion.
Correlation Coefficient
Measures the strength and direction of relationships between two variables.
Strength: Indicated by a numeric value between 0 and 1.0.
Direction: Indicated by the sign (+ or -).
Positive Correlation: Both variables increase or decrease together.
Negative Correlation: One variable increases while the other decreases.
Evaluating Correlational Studies
Advantages:
Real-world applicability; no manipulation of variables.
Wide scope for study topics.
Limitations:
No Causality: Correlation does not imply one variable causes another.
Snapshot nature: Possible temporal influences.
Potential for unmeasured third variables influencing the relationship.
4. Special Case Designs: Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Studies
Cross-Sectional Studies:
Data collected from multiple age groups at one time.
Example: Studying five-year-olds, ten-year-olds, and fifteen-year-olds simultaneously.
Longitudinal Studies:
Data collected from the same group at multiple points in time.
Example: Gathering data on a group of individuals over several years (2017, 2022, 2027).
Epidemiological Studies
Focus on frequency and distribution of symptoms leading to specific diagnoses.
Prevalence: Proportion of individuals with a disorder at any given time, lifetime prevalence, or over set periods.
Incidence: Number of new cases arising during a specified timeframe.
Example: Tracking new anxiety or mood disorder cases during the COVID pandemic.
Risk and Resilience Factors
Risk Factors: Characteristics associated with increased vulnerability to disorders (e.g., genetics, drug use).
Resilience Factors: Traits that reduce vulnerability or impact of stressors.
