Understanding Test-Wise Strategies: These are techniques that enhance the likelihood of selecting the correct answer on multiple-choice tests, particularly when unsure about the answer. This approach emphasizes using one’s knowledge and characteristics of the questions rather than merely guessing.
It's essential first to apply your knowledge of the material to answer questions.
If multiple options remain after applying the process of elimination, utilize the characteristics of the question itself to make a more informed choice (Flippo & Caverly, 2009).
Three Test-Wise Strategies for Multiple-Choice Questions:
Utilize a Process-of-Elimination Strategy:
Focus on eliminating obviously incorrect options first, narrowing choices to increase the probability of selecting the correct answer.
Recognize Qualifying Words:
Pay special attention to answer choices that contain ambiguous qualifying terms (e.g., usually, probably, likely). Answers declared as absolutes (e.g., always, never, only) are often incorrect due to the nature of knowledge being complex and nuanced.
Example: Choices containing phrases like "always" or "must" are likely false when answering questions.
Select the Longest Answer:
Generally, true statements may require more context, potentially leading to longer answer choices.
Middle Answers: In a sequence of options, investigate the middle responses (e.g., b or c) since this is where correct answers tend to be positioned according to instructional patterns (Linn & Gronlund, 1995).
